From Sally Hacala and Dave Meyer, GLEE Instructors:
We began the day with a few ice breaker games that allowed the group to start working together right away to accomplish a few tasks. The first activity was a ice breaker called two minute teach in which the girls were paired up and had two minutes to teach their partner a unique skill. The results were hilarious, and my favorite was how to make an alligator with your hands. I guess being a Laurel Gator might have something to do with that. The second activity was called Key Punch. This was a full group activity that forced the group to problem solves a variety of problems to see how fast the group of 28 could solved the problem. The girls worked together great and showed fantastic leadership throughout the activity dropping their total time to solve the activity to under one minute and thirty seconds.
When the girls were all warmed up we went right into discussing how to build a fire. We learned the three essentials for fires and we all gathered the three types of fuel need to start and keep a fire going. Ask your daughter what they are and see if they remember. Hint: tinder, kindling, and heavy fuel. We talked about the benefits of building a Hunters fire and we walked the group through how to setup the area for this kind of fire. Tomorrow we will actually start the fire.
When we returned from lunch put on our harnesses and got ready for the high ropes. We decided to start the girls on the Catwalk, which is a large log approx. 40' in the air. The girls climb up a tree to get to the log, and then walk across holding on to nothing. The look on your daughters faces when they got on top of the log was priceless. They also did crafts in the lodge. We finished the day with a refreshing freeze pop before everyone headed off to the bus and their rides home.
We look forward to another exciting day tomorrow. As a head's up, we will take a trip to the Butler creek tomorrow so please have your daughters dress appropriately.
